Charles S Areni

Charles Areni (PhD, Florida, 1991) is the Executive Dean and Professor of Marketing in the Faculty of Business at the University of Wollongong. Prior to joining the University of Wollongong, Professor Areni held the position of interim Dean and Professor of Management (Marketing) at Macquarie Graduate School of Management. Professor Areni has previously held the role of Associate Dean and Chair of the Marketing Department at the University of Sydney and has more than 30 years of teaching experience across universities in Australia and the USA.
Professor Areni was also formerly the Principal of Uncommon Sense, a marketing research and consultancy business with former clients such as the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Big W (Woolworths), and Austar.
His research on language and persuasion, retail design and atmosphere, brand strategy, and gender stereotypes has been published in leading academic journals, including the Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, International Journal of Research in Marketing, Journal of Retailing and Cognition and Emotion.
His research on gender stereotypes led to the book The Other Glass Ceiling: Fathers Stepping Up, Mothers Letting Go, which has resulted in multiple media appearances, including the television program The Project and a Tedx lecture.
He has been an expert witness in several international federal trademark and intellectual property cases and served on the editorial review boards of several scholarly journals, including the Journal of Retailing, Psychology and Marketing, Journal of Business Research and the Journal of Advertising.
